Texas Courts Hit By Ransomware

The Texas Office of Court Administration (OCA) has admitted that it has been penetrated by a ransomware attack that breached their branch network some time between Friday night & Saturday morning.

The staff shutdown its branch network and servers, and the agency is working with the Texas Department of Information Resources to investigate the breach. The agency insists that it refuses to pay any ransom and has established a temporary website as a resource with critical judicial branch information.

Cloud environments offer protection

The agency also says that its resources already moved onto cloud infrastructure such as eFile Texas, reSearchTX, and document collaboration platforms have been immune to the attack, permitting many courts and judicial processes to continue uninterrupted. The office says that there is no indication that any sensitive or personal information was accessed during the incident, and trial courts throughout the state were not affected at all.

OCA says that judicial government employees have been undergoing cybersecurity training in recent weeks and will continue with that education to prevent such security incidents in the future.
