JPMorgan Chase Hires Former Google Exec Apoorv Saxena to Lead AI, Machine Learning Services

In another move that is starting to represent a trend, JPMorgan Chase has bolstered the strength of its artificial intelligence team, hiring former Google executive Apoorv Saxena.

Saxena, who served as the head of cloud-based artificial intelligence products for the search and technology giant, will lead the global bank’s artificial intelligence and machine learning services devision, according to CNBC.

This news follows JPMorgan’s high-profile hiring of Manuela Veloso earlier this year. She previously served as the head of the machine learning department at Carnegie Mellon University before joining the financial institution in a top AI research role in May.

This marks yet another example of JPMorgan’s new, external-looking focus, particularly in terms of finding the tech talent that can help a traditional bank keep up with the nimble, digital-native fintech firms that continue to disrupt the industry. “About one-third of JPMorgan’s recent senior hires are from outside the industry, according to the lender,” reported CNBC.

Saxena will be based in Palo Alto and is expected to oversee the roll out of various new technologies related to AI in the near future. “The role also places him in charge of asset and wealth management artificial intelligence technology, according to an internal memo seen by CNNMoney,” reported the outlet.
